The Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects the highest parts of the Rwenzori Mountain range. Unlike other parks that offer excellent game viewing opportunities, Rwenzori is better known for its spectacular sceneries and unique biodiversity. The national park is home to 70 species of mammals, 177 species of birds including 19 Albertine rift endemics, and the world’s rarest vegetation.
Climbing Mount Rwenzori is the primary activity done in this national park. Climbing Mount Rwenzori is the most challenging hiking experience in Africa. However, the legendary snowcapped peaks, trails leading through tropical rainforest rattling with monkeys and birds, huge tree heathers and colourful mosses draped across the mountainside with giant lobelias and everlasting flowers create and enchanting fairytale scene worth the strenuous hike. The Rwenzoris cover a 995Km2 and are composed of 6 mountain ranges whose snow and glaciers are permanent: Mount Stanley (5,109m), Mount Speke (4,890m), Mount Emin (4,798m) Mount Gessi (4,715 m) and Mount Luigi di Savoia (4,627m) separated by deep gorges.
