Mount Elgon National Park is straddled on Mount Elgon standing at 4,321 Kilometres, popularly known for its largest base of any extinct volcano in the world.
The National Park is home to a variety of birds, including the endangered lammergeryer which can be seen flying above the caldera and Saum gorge, antelopes, forest monkeys including the black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, elephants, and buffalos on the lower mountain slopes.
Most travellers visit Mount Elgon to see the magnificent 40 Km2 caldera, and the caves lefts by moving lava and erosion of soft volcanic deposits. The caves shelter the climbers and their porters as well as camping areas. On the foothills of the mountain lies the beautiful Sipi Falls in the Kapchorwa road outside the park.
In addition to mountain climbing, Birding, Hiking/ Nature Walks, and Mountain Biking, the spot at the highest side of the three waterfalls at Sipi welcomes anglers who take pride in battling with the rainbow trout because of its beautiful colouration and fighting ability. With your own gear, you can secure a permit from Sipi River Lodge.
